Kids and Plastic Surgery: When Should A Surgeon Get Involved?
By:
Dr Randolph C Robinson-12244

A boy that is shy and self-conscious because of the size of his ears.A girl suffering from a broken nose after a soccer game injury.A child born with a cleft lip. Each of these cases is a prime example of how plastic surgery can intervene, and improve the child's lifestyle now and well into the future. Plastic, cosmetic and reconstructive surgery is defined as a variety of operations performed to repair or restore body parts to look normal, or to change a body part to look better. These types of surgeries are highly specialized, and undergo careful preparation of the person's skin and tissues to ensure minimal scarring. With technological advances, the options available today are amazing, and can provide a world of relief to an insecure or injured child. Plastic surgeons offer two types of surgery.Reconstructive – procedures that correct birth defects or traumatic injuries. These would include cleft lips and ear deformities, as well as car and sports injuries, dog bites, and burns. Cosmetic – procedures that alter a part of the body a person may have previously been uncomfortable with. This may include rhinoplasty (reshaping the nose), or otoplasty (repositioning protruding ears). According to the ASPS, over 333,000 people 18 years and younger had plastic surgery in 2005, up from about 306,000 in 2000. And like cosmetic surgery for adults, the numbers will keep climbing as technology increases the options available. While adults typically choose plastic surgery to stand out from the crowd, children and teens choose plastic surgery to fit in with their peers. Plastic surgery allows them to blend in with their friends, and reduce the chance for name calling over differences. Is plastic surgery the right choice for your child?Ultimately it's a very personal decision. Reconstructive surgery is almost always a great choice. Repairing significant defects or problems will not only improve a child's looks, but help improve their self esteem as well. The teenage years can be difficult times with peer pressure, and eliminating differences can help a child blend in, and reduce being the brunt of jokes. It can allow a child to concentrate on what's truly important – school and friendships – instead of worrying about the next round of laughter or rude comments. Cosmetic surgery is a preference that is dependent on the child and the procedure. A doctor may spend time with a child to discover why the procedure is important to him or her, and to decide if the child is ready for the requirements and demands of surgery. Above all, be honest and upfront with your child, providing they are old enough to be a part of the decision. Find out as much as you can and talk through all of your questions and concerns. The more informed you are, the easier the procedure will be. Once you have the facts, decide which procedure is right for you.

Is The Bugaboo Chameleon Stroller The Rolls Royce Of Strollers?
By: Patricia Stephenson - [family] Posted 09/18/07
So what's all the fuzz about the Bugaboo Chameleon stroller, is it any good or just a celebrity hyped device used by stars like Gwen Stephani, Gwyneth Paltrow or Geri Halliwell? The Chameleon is a new and improved version of the bugaboo Frog model. It's meant to appeal to the active parent who wants to get around everywhere, whether it's the subway, pram, woods, sandy beach or whatever terrain you want to get through. The prize tag is at least something that can be a bit breath taking at first, but the question is, is it worth it? Well, the parents who use it swear by it, because of its light weight, but still stable, and the ability to use it everywhere. The seat and bassinet is reversible, so when the baby grows and wants to look around instead of facing you, it's easy to turn around in one grip. And, it really does have some very inventive features, and it's obvious that the designers of the chameleon are active parents themselves who developed a stroller they would want themselves. One thing that's never been seen on another stroller before its the ability to put the seat up and down vertically, so that the baby can sit at a table-high position and join you at the table in caf for example, or just if you want to have a comfortable position when feeding your baby outside sitting on a bench or similar. The swivel like wheels make the chameleon bugaboo stroller very easy to manoeuvre, you don't have to push the handle down to get the front wheels up when turning, this is very handy, and after using a stroller like that it feels really uncomfortable to drive the "normal" stroller with fixed wheels. Some useful tips on how to use the chameleon bugaboo further: - The Carrycot is approved for use for overnight sleeping, good if you are on a trip. - The Pushchair seat can be used as a seat on the floor or the ground as well. - The handle bar is height adjustable. -The under seat bag is bigger then before; good for shopping or storage. -When the stroller is folded it takes up minimum space, it fits easily even in the smallest car. -The seat frame is 2 inches longer so will accommodate a longer baby and taller child. So is this really the Rolls Royce of stroller some claim it to be? Yes, probably, a bit costy indeed, but should be looked upon as an investment, because with it's high quality construction you can use it for as long as you need to have your child in a stroller or pram. Winning Hearts Leads to Winning College Scholarships
By: Dale Clifton, The Scholarship Doctor - [family/teens] Posted 08/16/07
A mother was at home, and there was a knock at the door. She opened the door and was surprised to see a person standing there with a bouquet of flowers. It wasn't a holiday, birthday, or anniversary. The flowers were a total surprise! They turned a rather ordinary day into an exceptional one to be remembered for weeks to come. Little remembrances are cherished. And, the person who sends them is not forgotten. We all like to be remembered in unusual and caring ways. How did you feel when you received a gift that was totally unexpected? You talked about it for days, weeks, perhaps months. The teachers and staffs of high schools aren't any different and yet, it does not happen very often for them. Kind words are good, but a thoughtful note is better, and a small gift is best. A teacher remarked that she once had a student who had many physical issues. It created some unusual classroom problems in her chemistry class. The mother of that student knew this and constantly thanked the teacher with complimentary notes and small gifts throughout the school year not just on holidays. It made the teacher feel appreciated, needed, and respected. Another teacher remarked in class that he had lost his gloves and his hands had not yet thawed out during the drive to school. The next day, the teacher came to class and noticed a pair of brand new gloves laying on his desk. He was choked up. The young man, who brought them, never said a word. But,Mom knew better and sent the teacher an Email. I wonder what that teacher said in his recommendation letter for that student? Everything good, I'm sure. A typical high school has administrators, teachers and a support staff. Who will be affecting your student? Who will your student have for classroom teachers in the coming year? Find out who they are. You will want to know the receptionist at the main desk. Don't forget the secretary in the guidance office. Who cooks the lunches, sweeps the floors, and empties the wastebaskets? Bus drivers often have a particularly difficult situation. Also remember the principal and vice-principal. Many times all of these people are only remembered when something negative happens. Letting them know that you recognize and appreciate the jobs they're performing, for the benefit of your child, will make it easier for your student. Favors and kindnesses are always returned. Find out when those birthdays and anniversaries happen and remember them with a card, note or even cookies. And, in those few short years, when college scholarship time rolls around, people will be happy to write glowing testimonials for your student. Remember this: everything in life is a decision, make the right ones today for your college scholarship success.

Aggressive Behaviour In Dogs and How To Cure It
By: Brian - [family/petsdogs] Posted 06/22/07
Aggressive Behaviour In Dogs Aggressive dog behaviour is very complex and potential consequences are serious. It can lead to unpleasant situations where, at best, you are embarrassed by your dog's actions and, at worst, another dog or person gets hurt. Aggressive dogs have been known to break through screen doors and windows to attack the little ones. Aggressive dogs can be retrained under the right circumstances. It is not unusual for owners of aggressive dogs to refuse to acknowledge the problem. Worse than all of these are put together, aggressive dogs can kill. With the violently aggressive dog, work on desensitizing him to the environment that he considers aversive and teach him behaviour incompatible with aggression, rather than focusing on his canine body language. An aggression problem will not go away by itself. Take action & put an end to your dog's embarrassing & dangerous aggression issues. Aggression in dogs is the most serious behaviour problem that pet owners must deal with, and it is largely preventable if the owner understands canine growth periods and the factors that influence the development of aggressive behaviour. Knowledge of the early growth periods of dogs helps to understand canine aggression. Environment -- living conditions, lack of socialization, excessive punishment, being attacked or frightened by an aggressive dog, being spoiled or given too much unwarranted praise by owners, being isolated from human contact or being exposed to frequent teasing by children or aggravation by joggers --can also influence aggression. Although aggressive dog behaviour is normal for a dog, it is unacceptable toward humans. There are certain types of aggressive dog behaviour that occur for a variety of reasons. The most common reason for aggressive dog behaviour is instability in the dominance hierarchy of the dog pack, your family. Dominant aggressive dogs defend their food, dog toys, or other valued objects. Fear-aggressive dog behaviour is a defensive reaction and occurs when a dog believes he is in danger of being harmed. Territorial aggressive dog behaviour is usually associated with defence of property. Territorial aggressive dog behaviour includes territorial investigation, territorial marking (urine, scratch marks, etc. Predation is usually considered as a unique kind of aggressive dog behaviour, because it is motivated by the intent to obtain food, and not primarily by the intent to harm or intimidate. This is a natural form of aggressive dog behaviour in the pack that occurs when a dog experiences or is threatened with pain, or physical punishment, for defending itself from being hurt or attacked. Punishing a Fear-Biter will make him more fearful, and therefore a more aggressive dog. Attempting to punish a dominant aggressive dog is likely to cause him to escalate his behaviour in order to retain his dominant position. Punishing a territorial, possessive, or protective aggressive dog is likely to elicit additional defensive aggression. Using punishment to discourage the types of aggressive dog behaviour will only make the problem worse by encouraging more aggression. Working with aggressive dogs requires an animal behaviour specialist who understands animal learning theory and behaviour. It is important when you see these types of aggressive dog behaviours to establish that you are really the 'alpha dog' by taking control of things and situations. Though only a small percentage of people are bitten by dogs each year, there are many other types of aggressive dog behaviours that are unacceptable. Most people have seen the signs of aggressive dogs like bared teeth, growling, and biting, yet often people do not understand the reasons for aggressive behaviour in dogs. First, it is important to note that the types of aggressive dog behaviour are not more prominent in any one breed over another. Therefore, it is important to realize that any dog showing signs of aggressive dog behaviour needs to be trained out of those behaviours. Any aggressive dog is potentially a dangerous dog. A fear aggressive dog needs to know he can rely on his owner. Contrary to what most people think, nearly all aggressive dogs have been well socialized and very often have advanced obedience training. The reality is that too many pet owners discover that they that they have an aggressive dog on their hands. Having an aggressive dog has always been a dangerous thing and today, an owner of an aggressive dog is held responsible for their dog's actions. In addition if you have an aggressive dog which you love, he may be put down if he should injure someone or other animals. This does not mean that owning an aggressive dog should be taken lightly, but rather owning an aggressive dog will mean that you will need to take action early on to correct the issue. One of the techniques when training an aggressive dog is to teach the dog to bite a selected object such as a protection sleeve, then teach them to let go of the sleeve. An aggressive dog will attack and bite his victim and then release and grip again. Because of this, the aggressive dog must be taught to respond to command. A small investment in aggressive dog training could possibly prevent a lifetime of legal fees, medical bills, and mental anguish. Last but certainly not least, you should never punish or reprimand your aggressive dog; this will only make the situation worse.
Training aggressive dog seriously and properly with special aggressive dog training will however solve the problem. Are you ready to start learning some 'training aggressive dog' tips? How To Give Your Cockatiel A Balanced Diet
By: Jessica Harrison - [family/petsbirds] Posted 07/13/07
Cockatiels are meant to be cared for. As an owner of a pet you know you should give the health of your Cockatiel top priority. Your pet's health depends on its diet. In the wild, birds make do with whatever they find. For this reason, you should include a variety of things in their diet, to stay as close to their natural diet as possible On the other hand, your Cockatiel can eat most of the things that you eat. Cockatiels mainly feed on seeds, berries, fruits, nuts and flowers. Sometimes, they can thrive on the basic diet of seeds and pellets alone. They don't require any particular food but need "particular nutrients". You should add more vegetables and fruits to your Cockatiel's diet. These are sources of additional nutrition. The growth of your Cockatiel depends on nutrition. Apart from growth, reproduction, temperament and longevity also depend on nutrition. So, a good balanced diet becomes very essential to mould a lovable, healthy and life-long companion. To put it briefly, a "Cockatiel balanced diet" should have equal shares of pellets, seeds and vegetables, with a small quantity of fruits, nuts, proteins, cooked rice, bean mixture, and table food like cheese, corn, cereal, pasta, meat, etc. The diet should have it all (that's why I said they can eat most of the things that you eat!). Pellets Pellets can make as much as 60% of your Cockatiel's food. In fact, some Cockatiels thrive on a pellet diet. You should keep pellets in their food-dish, all day and night. Pellets are a must as they provide your bird a balanced diet. Seeds Most Cockatiels favor seeds like bulk canary seed, oats, mixed Sunflower seeds, Hemp and Panicum Millets. If you provide your bird with only a seed diet on a daily basis, it will lead to deficiency in vitamins. So, a supplement of vitamins may be necessary in that case. A Healthy mixed diet A healthy mixed diet has it all...25% vitamin enriched seed mix, 25% pellets, 25% vegetables, dark leafy greens and fruits, 15% cooked rice, corn, and bean mixture, 10% table food, cereal, bread, pasta, cheese, meat etc. Vegetables Vegetables to be fed can be green, dark green, orange, yellow or meaty. Fresh vegetables provide the additional nutrition for your Cockatiel. So, encourage your Cockatiel to eat vegetables. Some of those that fall under this category are: carrots, sweet potatoes, beets, broccoli, greens, green peppers, asparagus, ripe tomatoes, spinach etc. Fruits Some of the Cockatiel owners have this general query. 'How to make my bird eat fruits?' Fruits provide the natural supplements to your Cockatiel. So, it would be a good idea to introduce fruits to your pet. Initially, it may reject it, but later it will start eating fruits. Some of the favored fruits are apples, pears, peaches, pomegranate, bananas, berries, plums, oranges, kiwi, citrus, grapes, raisins etc. Nuts A Cockatiel prefers nuts to fruits. Because of this, some nuts make ideal treats. They can crack hard nuts and you should encourage them to do so. You can give them whole nuts as they love to crack open the shell to extract the seed. Their beaks are specially adapted for this function which could also be a form of entertainment. Water Water is equally important, as food. Make sure your bird drinks water on a daily basis. Don't forget to leave fresh water in the cage at all times. Proteins As I said earlier, it's important that your bird gets all the necessary nutrients. And proteins are an important supplement that aid growth. You can also give your bird, food high in proteins, such as legumes, cooked eggs and grated cheese. Sprouts, ripe tomatoes, cooked beans, spinach are some of the other sources. You can also feed them freshly cooked lean beef, chicken or fish in small quantities. Occasionally, you can give your Cockatiel cooked meat bones. Vitamins and Minerals If your bird's diet has a variety of all the nutrients, then supplement of vitamins and minerals is not required. As a matter of fact, it is better to consult an avian vet before giving your bird vitamin supplements because an overdose of vitamins and minerals will do more harm than good. Now, having known all that you can give your Cockatiel; let's also know as to what should be avoided. AVOID Don't feed your Cockatiel alcohol, parsley and avocados (as they are toxic to Cockatiels). Seeds high in sunflower and safflower, should be avoided as these are very fatty. Keep your bird away from chocolates and caffeine. Iceberg lettuce and cabbage can cause diarrhea in your pet. Other foods to be avoided are seasoned meat or fatty processed meats. All these can cause your pet serious health problems. Other important tips Keep in mind that just providing them the food isn't sufficient but you have to make sure that they're eating what is given to them. Do not include too much milk in their diet as some birds are lactose-intolerant and could get diarrhea. You can give them tofu, low-fat cottage and hard cheeses and non-fat yogurt in small quantities. If you aren't including pellets/ vitamins/ mineral supplements in their diet, you should sprinkle a powdered bird vitamin/ mineral supplement to their food once a week. This would avoid deficiencies. Although a calcium block and a mineral block should normally serve this purpose, these birds are known to destroy the blocks. Don't let fruits and vegetables stay in the cage, for more than two hours. Do not give them nuts and peanuts often, as these are very high in fat and can make your pet obese, if overfed. Dry food can be left for no more than a day. Always store nuts in a secure bin that will keep the contents dry and safe from rodents. Rodent excreta can transmit diseases like Salmonellosis. Clean the food and water bowls kept inside the cage, thoroughly every day. Disinfect them with bleach (and wash off thoroughly) every week. Some Cockatiels have the tendency to become overweight; so you need to monitor their food and diet properly. Stick to a low fat diet and include a variety of greens. Don't increase the volume, as overfeeding will make them picky and they will also waste the food. Cockatiels are prone to tipping over their bowls. Usage of heavy bottomed feed and water bowls serve the purpose just fine. With all these tips, I believe you would be able to provide your Cockatiel with the best diet. Should I Home School?
By: Lisa Lee - [family/kids] Posted 05/18/07
We all want our children to get the best education possible, especially in those early, formative years. Yet we have to admit, in most cases, that the public school system has become inadequate at best, and just isn't teaching our kids the basic skills they'll need to survive in the real-world job market. Private schools can offer a better option, but the cost may be greater than the average family can afford, especially if there is more than one child. And the parent usually has little control over the curriculum or the peer group the child will fall in with. Many people are looking into the option of home schooling. They are asking ''Is home schooling for me?'' This is an important question. And there are several related questions you should answer before diving in. Answering these questions should give you a better understanding of what home schooling is all about. First, why would I want to home school? Most home schoolers believe the public schools are not doing an adequate job of educating. Slow learners are falling further and further behind while gifted students are not adequately challenged. At home slower learners can get the one-on-one attention they need. And gifted students can move ahead at their own pace and even finish early. In a home school setting the parents can adjust the schedule to fit the child. I have two children I'm currently home schooling. The older one is a quick learner with a photographic memory. He doesn't need much repetition of facts in order to remember them. My second child is just the opposite. He needs hours and hours of repetition. Isn't it amazing how different two blood brothers can be? Parents can also adjust the curriculum to fit the child. I had no trouble teaching my older boy to read. So I used the same curriculum with boy number two. It didn't work. Hmmm, OK. So I switched curriculums. Now my second son is doing much better, and not nearly as frustrated with learning. And Mom didn't have to get frustrated, either. Parents and students can be flexible when they teach and learn at home. What are some more reasons? Many parents are choosing to home school for safety reasons. Let's face it, schools simply are not safe. Sadly, many students in public schools are faced with criminal situations every day. At the very least they probably have to put up with bullies. And when was the last time you heard of any POSITIVE effects from peer pressure? It's easy to see that this type of environment is usually very stressful and distracts from the real purpose of being at school, namely learning. Another reason many people home school, is because they are fed up with public schools teaching evolution, sex and other hot button subjects. Home schoolers generally view these subjects as topics that should be taught at home, not at school. They feel that when the schools teach these subjects the schools are usurping their parental authority. By choosing to home school, parents can take back their God-given authority/responsibility to raise their children with a Biblical worldview. Whatever your reason for homeschooling make sure you define it. Knowing why you are doing something will help you to stay focused when things get rough. How can I be sure I'm teaching my child the things he/she needs to know? Once you have decided to home school, you should contact your local school board and ask them what the requirements are. Some schools require that you register your child, some do not. Some schools will allow you to use their curriculum (if you want to). Virtually every school is different. And every state has different requirements. Many local libraries also have information on what needs to be taught at different grade levels. Of course, there have been many books written on the subject as well. And let's not forget the web. Doing a search on home schooling will turn up loads of information. Where can I find curriculum to use? There are so many publishers of educational materials out there that the question becomes ''How do I know which to use?'' But let's answer the first question first. You can find curriculum at your local library, at home schooler's book sales, book stores, used book stores, on-line retailers, on-line used curriculum sites, and direct from the publishers. How do you decide which to use? That depends on you, your child and your goals. For example, if your child has learning problems, you would buy curriculum designed for children with learning problems. If you want to teach Biblical values you would purchase from a Christian publisher. First, evaluate your child's situation, decide what your goals will be, and choose the area of study upon which you wish to concentrate. Then go to the stores, libraries or publishers, or spend some time online, and make your selections based on these criteria. Finally, do I have time to home school? Ah yes, the big ''T'' question. There never seems to be enough time with our busy schedules these days. Obviously, if you're not going to be home for at least six waking hours (your child's, not yours), then it's going to be very difficult to provide a quality education. Ideally, there should be a stay-at-home parent to do the teaching, but even if you have to work the standard 8-hour day, it's still possible by adjusting and pairing your schedules. It's all a matter of priorities. We'll always find the time to do the things we consider most important.Take the plunge. Once you have your student(s) and curriculum in front of you the fun can start. Did I say fun? Forgive me, I am not trying to be sarcastic. Oftentimes it may seem more like work, but you can make it fun with the right attitude. Think of it as a new, life-changing adventure that you and your child will be taking together. Many home schoolers are even incorporating educational games and toys into their curriculum. Games can make learning easier and a lot more interesting. Just one more reason to make the bold move away from the public school system and over to the home school system

Combating Visual Perceptual Disorders In Autism
By: Danial Dawood - [family/parenting] Posted 04/13/07
Visual perceptions can affect a number of kids that have autism and you should not assume that all autistic children are affected in a certain way since autism can cause unique type of symptoms in different child. Do your best to match the most accurate remedies according to the signs that is shown in your child. With the case of visual perception, there are methods available out there for your child to use which can effectively improve their condition. Those approaches let them view the world in a new light thus making learning and understanding of situations smoother than before. At the same time, utilizing those tactics can possibly control behavioral issues that are associated with autism. People who have their sensory easily overwhelmed and distorted are also common among the population that are not suffering from autism. This characteristic have brought about many studies on it and over the years there are multiple treatment options that is being made available. For autistic individuals, they usually discover that the sensory overload that are generated by lights, colors, contrast, shapes and patterns is simply too unbearable and this is the reason why you see them acting out or totally isolating themselves in general. Complication of the sensory could be due to a genetic condition and what autism did is to naturally enhance it. What this mean is that if the parents have problem with reading or been treated previously for visual perceptive issues, then the child would almost certainly need help too. One practical way of treating visual-perceptual disorders is by using the Irlen Method. In a nutshell, this process takes color and then use it to achieve a better harmonized surrounding. Helen Irlen had pioneered the studies of visual perception and is credited with the discovery of Scotopic Sensitivity Syndrome (SSS) or also known as Irlen Syndrome. Have you ever heard of suggestions that improve the speed and technique of your reading by placing a color filter over the page? If you do, then you will comprehend better what the Irlen Method can achieve. Studies have shown that this method does work. The result can be seen exceptionally well if your autistic child's level of reading is at the intermediate stage. The idea is to use the color filters and then evaluate whether there is any improvement in reading speed and comprehension. The wave length of lights that are causing discomfort must be eliminated. Sensitivity to the wrong light or color can lead to fatigue, strain and an environment with higher distortion. Offending colors can be filtered by observing for any positive changes and then implementing the color that works with the individual at all time. Please keep in mind that the technique require a bit of trial and error effort since you need to determine which color is the one that is is blocking the undesirable light. Different child will respond differently to the various colors. The usage of these color filters will usually take place throughout their life. Yearly evaluation is needed to determine the effectiveness of the colors because fading colors means fading benefit. Other than reading, you may apply it to copying, handwriting or during usage of computer. Another thing to take note is that your autistic child would probably appreciate the usage of the color filters during the entire day instead of only when reading. There are glasses designed especially for this purpose by having colored lenses. Beside the filters and lenses, you can also consider using colored light bulbs within the surrounding of an autistic persons who have visual perception condition. A wonderful application to this is when your child is too young with limited language capability thus by observing for any difference in behavior could mean an indication of a problem. An important aspect to remember here is that an individual with visual perception disorder will prefer and feel more comfortable with indirect natural lighting or incandescent lighting. Avoid fluorescent lightning and maintain a dimly lit room instead of bright. There are 4 main criteria that the above approach will benefit your child namely depth perception, social integration, education and their physical wellness. Depth perception is improved when the right colors assist the child to establish how near or far they are from a certain object. Their world will turn more three-dimensional. In the area of social integration, the autistic child will feel more relaxed. This will give them a conducive environment to clearly interpret expressions on the faces of people around them. Uncomfortable feeling like light-headedness and headaches can be greatly reduced while reading and the child will feel more motivated during learning session. All this contribute to them being less stressed out so that their physical well being can develop properly. There are clinics and professionals all around the world that have been certified in the Irlen Method. Help your child deal better with their autism by carefully testing this method or any other technique and minimize their visual processing problems.

Six Tell-Tale (And Funny) Signs That You're Addicted to Christmas
By: Noel Jameson - [family] Posted 11/28/06
In case you didn't know it -- it is possible to be addicted to Christmas. Certainly, some level of excitement over Christmas is normal, but at what point does it border on unhealthy (or even insane)? For many individuals, a Christmas addiction poses a greater threat than getting run over by a reindeer. If you want to know what the top six signs of being addicted to Christmas are, read on... #1 -- Boycotting Anti-Santa Malls If you refuse to shop at a mall that doesn't have a Santa on duty at all times, you're probably suffering from a Christmas addiction. (Reality check: Once you hit the age of 7 or 8, you probably don't need to get your photo taken sitting on Santa's lap!) #2 -- Spiking Your Eggnog? If you need spiked eggnog just to make it through your Christmas shopping marathon, it's a telltale sign that you're probably addicted to Christmas. #3 -- Desperately Seeking the North Pole If you've tried Googling directions from your house to the North Pole five times and still aren't sure how to get to Santa's house, you are probably addicted to Christmas. #4 -- Expecting Mail from Santa If you check your mail everyday hoping Santa sent you a letter, you should seek help to deal with your Christmas addiction. #5 -- Taking the Christmas Theme Too Far If you sleep on red and green plaid sheets and wear red and green pajamas with socks and underwear decorated with Santa every night beginning on December 1 until Christmas Eve, you are definitely addicted to Christmas (and you should really keep that secret to yourself). #6 -- Identity Issues Finally, if you've submitted a name-change application to legally change your last name to Clause (and you're getting all new monogrammed towels embroidered with a red and green ?S? and ?C?), you have some serious Christmas addiction issues. What Is the Solution for Christmas Addiction? Eat two Christmas wreath cookies each and every day until December 25th and call me in the morning. It has been documented that Christmas addiction rapidly subsides at 11:59 p.m. on December 25. Take your cookies, drink plenty of eggnog, and wait it out until then.

Nothing to Sneeze At
By: Jed Yorkshire - [family/petscats] Posted 10/26/06
Sniffing, sneezing, coughing, watery eyes - no, it's not a commercial for your favorite cold medication - it's your life - if you're allergic to cats, that is. But just because you're allergic to those fluffy little felines doesn't mean you can't have one of your own. You just have to find ways to deal. For starters, you can find a breed that sheds less and produces less dander, like the Sphynx (a ''hairless'' cat with a fine, downy fuzz for hair), Cornish Rex or Devon Rex. They've all got hair, but according to The Cat Fancier's Association, many people who are typically allergic to cats can tolerate these breeds better than others. If you're not lucky enough to find one of these purebreds, there are still some steps you can take to become a loving, although allergic, cat owner. According to PETCO.com, you can alleviate your symptoms by doing the following: - Washing your hands after play time - and NEVER touching your face after touching your cat. - Don't allow your cat in your bedroom - if you do, he'll surely nap on your bed, spreading allergy-inducing hair and dander. - Use HEPA air filters and a vacuum with a HEPA filter, as well. - Leave your cat's weekly (or daily) grooming to a non-allergic family member. And if the cat will allow it, have him bathed once a week. - Two or more cats might sound like a nice little pride for your house, but more cats mean more allergens, so make yours a one-feline family. Until you become less allergic or find the best way for you and your cat to peacefully - and healthily - coexist, be sure to keep treatments on hand to help you through the rough patches. If over-the-counter medications or all-natural treatments don't work, just ask your doctor - I'm sure he'll have something up his sleeve that will help alleviate the sniffling, sneezing, coughing..

Marvelous Messy Fun that Little Kids Love
By: Rachel - [family/kids] Posted 10/12/06
1. Fingerpainting with a twist. Try different fingerpaints besides the traditional store bought kind. For example: Chocolate pudding paint. Just buy a can of ready-made pudding from the grocery store. Or Jello finger painting: Mix together 1 package of Jello and 2 Tbsp hot water in a small bowl being careful not to overmix. Let cool 5 to 10 min. before using. Paint on tin foil for a neat effect. For some more edible food craft ideas visit create-kids-crafts.com. 2. Play dough. Play dough is fun to squish, squash and create with. No need to go out and buy some, there's a great recipe below. Make an easy playdough rose for an idea: 1. Roll out a thin, long snake and press it flat. Loosely roll it up like a rug from one end to the other. Spread and press each layer out a bit. 2. For the leaves, flatten a piece of play dough with your hands. Cut out 2 leaf shapes with a plastic knife and press them onto the bottom of the rose. For a photo of the playdough rose and other cool playdough creations for kids(little and big) visit my web site below. 3. Bubble blowing without tears. Here's a great recipe that uses ''tearless'' baby shampoo that won't sting eyes if bubbles get splattered in little eyes. 3 cups water, 1 cup baby shampoo, 1/3 cup light corn syrup. Mix all together in a large bowl. 4. Oobleck. Who says small children have short attention spans? This alone fascinated my 2 yr. old at the time for 45 minutes. Recipe: 1 cup cornstarch, 1/3 cup water, 5 to 7 drops food coloring(optional). Mix water and food coloring together. Slowly add cornstarch. Do not stir. Let the mixture stand for 1 to 2 minutes. Pick a handful of the oobleck up and squeeze it until it forms a hard ball. Open your hand and the oobleck will turn from a solid back into a liquid. If it gets too dry after awhile, just add a bit more water. Kool-Aid Playdough Recipe(Adult assistance and supervision required) 1 cup flour 1/2 cup salt 1 small pkg. unsweetened Kool-Aid (6 g pkg) 1 1/2 Tbsp cooking oil 1 c boiling water Mix flour, salt, oil and Kool-Aid. Add boiling water; stir and knead until cooled and smooth. Store in a plastic bag in the refrigerator. This playdough will be the color and scent of the Kool-Aid you used. Remember to supervise little kids with these ideas to ensure that with some of the ideas they don't put things in their mouth.
